Roanoke teachers get a locker-room pep talk before classes begin

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Getting a pep talk before they welcome students back to class, Roanoke's public school teachers and staff welcomed the new year at the annual convocation held at the Bergland Center on Monday.

School superintendent Rita Bishop opened the convocation touching on the schools successes from last year which include increasing the overall graduation rate.

They also heard a speech from Bill Curry, former center for the Greenbay packers, Georgia tech coach and ESPN football analyst.

In his motivational speech Curry touched on how mentoring todays youth is the most important job in America.


"It is your responsibility and your opportunity to develop it and to give it with all of your heart and when you do you change lives, you transform people. It's a fact of life," Curry said.

Roanoke city students return to school August 18.
