RICHMOND (WSLS 10) - Thirty-five new grants will help fund learning centers across the commonwealth. Fourteen of the schools to receive grants are in southwest Virginia and four are in Roanoke.

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) said it is awarding the competitive grants, ranging from $118,000 to $200,000, to fund 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The centers help provide students with tutoring, enrichment activities that complement regular academic programs, and literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children. The department also is continuing funding of 52 programs that received initial grants in 2013 and 2014.
