ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -  A new enrichment program designed to expose kids to a wider range of career fields will soon open in the Star City.

The Making Foundation is opening a center that will teach 65 Roanoke elementary school students each week.

Executive Director Aaron Dykstra daid children will learn non-traditional classroom skills about building, manufacturing, problem-solving and working with their hands at "Maker's Mart."

A ribbon cutting was held Thursday at its location, 1205 Patterson Avenue in Roanoke.

Dykstra said he hopes to open children up to profitable career paths in the future.

"So many kids these days, the career landscape is really limited, specifically in Roanoke city," Dykstra said. "Some of the under-served neighborhoods, it's really kind of bleak on what their career options are. Meanwhile, we are manufacturing town and we have all kinds of opportunities here that just really need to be exposed to these kids."

Maker's Mart will open in two weeks on Patterson Avenue.
