'McTeacher' Night benefitting local schools

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - You may see some of your favorite teachers behind the counter at McDonald's Restaurants soon!  To help schools McDonald's Restaurants are bringing in teachers to work along with their employees behind the counter and In the drive through. It's all part of McTeacher's Night where schools raise money for different projects.

"It's amazing when the little children come in and they just "Miss Smith" and they run and grab their teacher and they just absolutely love it. It's a fun family thing," said Sally Scott, with McDonald's.

A percentage of everything sold that night to parents, students and the community goes back to the school. There are special "cookie totes" sold that night and sometimes they sell thousands of cookies. Some schools take it a step further and do fry or ice cream eating contest between the principal and assistant principal or some make signs and go on the street with the school mascot to get people to come in

"I think it's building a good relationship with the community, letting them know that McDonald's loves to get back and then they come to us for other things like I had a school that was having a spaghetti dinner fundraiser and their ice machine broke that day so they came and we help them with bags and bags of ice to help, but they know they can count on McDonald's," said Scott.

They usually raise between $400 to $1,300 and can use it for anything they want. Some schools need it for classroom supplies or others use it to help students pay for field trips.

Area stores are planning now for the Spring and have the following events set up:

  • April 4th at McDonald's (Lakeside location), corner of Melrose and Rt. 419, with Fairview Elementary, a Roanoke City school
  • April 25th at the Christiansburg location on N. Franklin St. with Christiansburg Elementary
