ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - You can thank a teacher here in Virginia and possibly help send them on vacation at the same time.

"It will always be one of the toughest jobs in the world, but one of the most important jobs in the world and so while we're working on getting support for teachers we also need to be taking every opportunity to say thank you," said Anne Holton, Virginia Secretary of Education.

The state has launched a "Thank a Teacher" campaign ahead of Teacher Appreciation Week asking people to send thank-you notes to K-12 teachers until May 6.

The campaign has been organized by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia PTA to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 2-6.

"Because all Virginia Lottery profits benefit K-12 public education, we are fortunate to meet many teachers and observe their hard work," said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. "If you know amazing teachers in Virginia, join us and say ‘thanks' – for making a difference for our children, our communities and our Commonwealth."

Postcard notes are available through participating PTA chapters, all Virginia Lottery Customer Service Centers, and thank-you note writing stations at select Virginia Lottery retailers. Digital thank-you notes and more information about the writing station locations across the state are available at www.valottery.com/thankateacher.
