ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -Local doctors are providing free screenings to the public to help patients monitor their health in between check-ups.

The latest numbers from the CDC show that more than 29-million people in the U.S. have diabetes. High cholesterol also continues to be a nationwide problem. Both are manageable with healthy eating and exercise but Carilion doctors say patients need to consistently know their numbers.

Carilion's Crystal Spring pharmacy offered free A1C and lipid testing to monitor blood sugar and cholesterol levels Saturday to help provide awareness as a test run to see if they can gain enough interest to make it a regular offering to the public.

"It's an important service that we want to reach out to the public and give them an opportunity if they can't get in to see a doctor regularly," Pharmacist Matt Turner said. "This is just an opportunity to see how things are going for them health wise."

Regular screenings are also available daily through the Carilion pharmacy on Riverside drive in Roanoke.
