Too much sodium can lead to heart disease

ROANOKE, Va. – According to the American Heart Association, Americans eat more than 3,400 milligrams of sodium each day.

That's more than double the 1,500 milligrams that's recommended.

All of the extra sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which can cause heart disease and stroke.

If you're looking for ways to spice up your food, Carilion Clinic Registered Dietician, Maggie Reinhold, says put down the salt shaker.

"I would say avoid using salt when you're cooking, as well as at the table. There are a lot of great ways to season our foods without using salt, so you can cook with dried or fresh herbs.  You can use spices like garlic powder or onion powder," said Reinhold.

When shopping for groceries, Reinhold says read the nutrition label.

Sodium should be less than 300 milligrams per serving.
