Anonymous $3 Million Gift to University of Houston Will Pay Med Students' Tuition

A generous donor has ensured several dozen medical students at the University of Houston will be able to pursue their degrees without the fear of debt by anonymously donating millions to the program.

The unknown benefactor donated $3 million to UHs College of Medicine, which will pay the full tuitionfor the colleges inaugural class of 30 medical students in the fall of 2020, the university said.

Student debt is the No. 1deterrent for students when applying to medical school," Renu Khator, president of the University of Houston, said in a statement. "This generous gift will allow such students an opportunity to attend and ultimately lead the future medical workforce. As a result, the UH College of Medicine will increase access to primary care, enhance quality of life and strengthen Houston as a business destination."

The donation marked a scholarship milestone for the university.

These early contributions to the College of Medicine are a crucial endorsement of the vision and the need for our College of Medicine, said Eloise Brice, vice president for university advancement. "Im very encouraged by the generosity of our donors in response to the need for primary care in our community.

The gift will also go toward the universitys goal of raising $1 billion for its Here, We Go campaign.
