Burma Shave signs will help promote pedestrian safety along the Greenway

Pedestrian related accidents have been on the rise in Roanoke. According to police, in 2013, there were 55 pedestrian related incidents which resulted in 44 injury cases and 2 deaths.

In January, Sandra Andrew was running along Walnut Avenue when she was hit by a mini-van. The Roanoke dentist continues to recover from her injuries.

"I don't have a memory of the actual accident" said Sandra Andrew. "I remember the ambulance ride to the hospital".

Months after her accident, Andrew is on the road to recovery. She does physical therapy more than three times a week. The long-time athlete had fractures to her leg, arm and other parts of her body. She also suffered head injuries.

Pedestrian related accidents, injuries and fatalities have grown over the years. City leaders said the rising number of incidences are, partly, due to population growth and a higher number of active people in areas like the Roanoke River Greenway. It is estimated that more than 250,000 people travel the Roanoke River Greenway each year. In an effort to make the area safer, local leaders designed a unique way to encourage people to be more aware of their surroundings. This spring, people with see "Burma Shave" signs along the Greenway to encourage users to be courteous to others along the path.
