ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The American Red Cross is sweetening the incentive to donate platelets this Thanksgiving.

Everyone who attempts to donate platelets on Thanksgiving Day, in the Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic Blood Services Regions will receive a free pumpkin pie, while supplies last.

Officials say platelets are the clotting factor in blood and only have a shelf life of five days. The primary use for platelet donations is to treat people battling cancer or leukemia.

All presenting Thanksgiving platelet donors will receive an added treat; a limited-edition Red Cross potholder stuffed with unique celebrity chef recipes, while supplies last.

Platelet donations are appointment only. Donors interested in donating in Norfolk or Virginia Beach may call 757-623-4880 to make an appointment. Donors interested in donating in Roanoke or Blacksburg may call 1-866-353-1030.
