ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A church in the star city is giving back to people in the community.

Volunteers from East Gate Church of the Nazarene held their annual community Thanksgiving dinner.

Over the years.. the event has grown and now about 500 people come to the event.

The pastor of the church says its good to give back and serve people during the holiday.

"During the holidays many people are sad they are lonely they lost loved ones and we're able to say we care about you we live in a fast paced society where you go your way and I go mine we're trying to say you know lets stop and smile, shake your hand let us give you something to eat and say God loves you," James Asberry, the pastor said.

Next week volunteers will pass out hot chocolate and coffee at the Vinton Christmas parade.
