It marks the transition from fall into the holiday season for "Dickens of a Christmas," which is Roanoke Valley's largest holiday celebration.

Last year about 35,000 people showed up for all three Friday night events.

"This is an event that's been going on for 32 years," says Matthew Klepeisz, Downtown Roanoke Inc. "It's something that's been embraced by our retailers and restaurants downtown and look forward to it and we do too."

Dickens of a Christmas will kick off on December 5 with the lighting of the city of the Roanoke Christmas tree.
