DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - The Danville Area Humane Society announced Friday they're offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for placing a young, injured chihuahua puppy in a box and abandoning the sealed box at a dumpster site.
Officials say on Thanksgiving Day, a man who was dumping some trash at the Mount Tabor dumpster site in Pittsylvania County heard a noise, and upon investigation, found the puppy in the box.
He kept the puppy overnight and the next day brought him to the animal shelter. Officials say the puppy appears to be sick and injured, and is now being treated at Animal Medical Center.
Abandonment of animals at public places is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and is punishable by 12 months in jail, a fine of up to $2,500, either or both.
Anyone with information is urged to call 799-0843; callers may remain anonymous. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered by private donations.
