SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE (WSLS) - The Smith Mountain Lake Model Railroad group has been raising money for Smith Mountain Lake Christian Ministry's A Child's Christmas Project for the last six years.  Over the years the group has been able to donate about ten thousand dollars.

Jerry Hale explains, "We have essentially no expenses to run the event.  It is all volunteers."

This year there will be eight model train displays for people to view at different homes around Smith Mountain Lake.  Saturday December 6 from 1:00-5:00 there will be five layouts to view and on Sunday December 7 from 1:00-5:00 there will be six layouts to tour.

Steve and Leah Holic are opening their home and their trains to the public this year for the first time.  Their train display plays homage to the Star City with a Mill Mountain Star and Mill Mountain Zoo.

It also has a functioning carnival complete with mobile hot air balloons and more.

Steve says, "I've been collecting trains for seventy years, since my first Christmas."
