Man dead after running car off Mt. Cross Road
PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police said a Danville man died when he ran his car off the road.
Virginia State Police Trooper M.S. Zola was called to the scene of a single-vehicle cras around 7:00 a.m. Friday. It happened in the 3700 block of Mt. Cross Road.
A 2006 Jeep Liberty was traveling north on Mt. Cross Road when it ran off the right side of the road, struck a ditch, overturned and then struck a utility pole. The driver, Chad M. Smith, 31, of Danville, Va., died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.
According to a post on the Facebook page of The Golden Leaf Bistro, Smith was head chef at the restaurant.

Based on the trooper's investigation of the crash, it appears that the crash occurred sometime around 2 a.m. Friday. However, the crashed vehicle was first discovered shortly before 7 a.m. by a nearby resident.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
