HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WSLS 10) - It was a scary situation Monday as crews worked to rescue a dog who had wandered out onto a pond and fallen through the ice.

Rescue crews say the dog was able to keep his head above the water but not get out of the ice. The dog was about 15-20 feet from the edge.

Crews say they located a boat on the edge of the pond and were able to rescue the dog. The dog was brought to shore, dried off, and the owner took the dog away.

Every year about 50 percent of fatalities related to frozen waters starts with someone going in after a pet that has fallen through the ice, according to emergency crews. They ask that you do not attempt to go out onto the ice yourself.
