WASHINGTON (AP) - A coating of ice on many roads and sidewalks is creating a tricky commute throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

The National Weather Service is warning of icy conditions and dense fog in the region on Monday morning after a blast of snow, sleet, ice and freezing rain on Sunday.

School systems canceled classes and federal, state and local government offices delayed openings. Liberal leave is in effect for Maryland state workers until noon. State of Delaware offices in New Castle and Kent counties open at 10 a.m. The District of Columbia government is opening on time.

Transportation officials say roads are mostly ice free, but motorists should watch for ice, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Transit officials in Maryland are warning of light rail delays and diversions for some bus routes.
