IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (11 ALIVE) - A stunning case of alleged child abuse is under investigation in North Carolina.
The sheriff's office says five children were found living in filth along with their parents and the body of their dead grandfather.
Deputies haven't identified the grandfather but say they found the 62-year-old man's body in the home on West Wind Loop on Friday evening. Deputies told NBC Charlotte the man had been dead at least 24 hours.
The sheriff's office calls the conditions extremely unsanitary and described a scene with large amounts of trash, dirty clothes and food on the floor in the living area. Plumbing leaks and raw sewage were found in the bathrooms.
DSS has taken custody of the children, whose ages range from 9 months old to 13 years. One of the children did not belong to either suspect.
Police arrested the parents, 25-year-old Melissa Kay Lynn Poole and 39-year-old Jeremy Daniel Dishner, and charged them with five counts of misdemeanor child abuse. Dishner was also wanted on an outstanding warrant in Alexander County for driving without a license. Both have been released on bond.
Property manager Wanda Stewart told NBC Charlotte this is not the first time the family had been reported and that a social worker visits the house. NBC Charlotte contacted Iredell County DSS about the claim but did not hear back. The sheriff's office confirmed at least one child removed from the home already had a social worker.
Stewart also claimed the couple had been cited for the trash multiple times in past.
