Galax community remembers children killed in fire
GALAX (WSLS 10) - A memorial remembering three children killed in a house fire last week drew hundreds of people to First Assembly of God Church in Galax.
The viewing and memorial remembered 7-year-old Dominic Delp, 4-year-old Ryleigh Delp and 9-month-old Randy Delp.
The mother, Amanda, and her 5-year-old son Gabriel were able to escape. She attempted to go back in to save the other children but was pushed back by the fire.
"That's all little Dominic wanted to do was play baseball," said Bobby Utt, the kids great uncle. "The little girl (Ryleigh) was as sweet as could be. The baby (Randy) didn't have a chance."
The fire is still under investigation, but is believed to be accidental.
"I grew up here and I know a lot of people. It's one of the worst tragedies that's happened in a long, long time," said family friend Tina Minger.
Beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, mourners and well wishers started pouring into the church. They comforted each other with tears and hugs.
"We see all of the love and support that strangers, family, friends, everyone has given us," said cousin Crystal Moore. "We sincerely appreciate it."
A GoFundMe account has already raised more than $16,000 to help with expenses and replace objects and materials lost.
But Thursday night was about remembering what can never be replaced.
"There's a little ball to represent baby Randy's favorite ball that (Amanda's) going to put in the casket to be buried with him," Moore said. "We're going to make sure this community knows these kids and remembers these kids as long as possible."
