RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Controlled burns are planned at two Richmond battlefields this month to preserve the landscape as it appeared during the Civil War.

If weather conditions are favorable, Richmond National Battlefield Park will conduct a controlled burn at the Malvern Hill battlefield on Wednesday. Another burn at the Cold Harbor battlefield is planned in the next few weeks.

The park trail and parsonage parking lot at Malvern Hill will be closed during the burn. Cold Harbor's park tour road and extended trail will be closed.

The controlled burns are conducted every two to three years.

The Civil War battles were fought at the Richmond sites during the summers of 1862 and 1864.
