GALAX (WSLS 10) - Construction is underway on a new rescue squad in the Piper's Gap region of Carroll County.

The $550,000 project will replace a 20-year-old building with a new facility that has nearly twice the capacity.

The station will have six ambulance bays, office and classroom space and living quarters. Squad leaders expect this to help them add seven volunteers to their staff by the end of the year, and also to cut down on emergency response times.

The building is situated where nearly 80 percent of Piper's Gap calls are fielded. The project will be paid for through loans and fundraising efforts.

The new station is expected to be up and running by July.
