ROANOKE CITY (WSLS 10) - The Red Cross is honoring heroes in the community, and the person being named Medical Hero works in a doctor's office and in a local elementary school.

Thanks to funds from a Kiwanis Club grant, Dr. Kristi Abraham can see young students with cochlear implants at the Roanoke Valley Regional Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing once a month, free of charge.

Teachers say the students are getting more consistent and quality care now thanks to the grant and Dr. Abraham's expertise.

"I feel like this is what I was created for, this is what I do, this is what I love to do and the fact that I love what I do and get to love what I do is a enough for me," Dr. Abraham explained.

Since she started the visits Dr. Abraham has connected with the kids getting to know them and their families.
