Sunday's deadly Rockbridge Co. crash claims second victim
ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A second person has died as the result of their injuries following a serious accident that occurred Sunday in the county.
Virginia State Police say they were notified Friday morning that the passenger in the F250 pickup truck, identified as Charles D. Higgins, 66, of Farmville, Va., passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Thrusday, April 23 - making this crash a double fatality.
A Rockbridge County High School student,Justin L. Ruley, 17, of Natural Bridge, Va., was identified earlier this week as the first victim in the crash.
His family has set up a fundraising page to help cover their costs of his funeral. On the site, t-shirts dedicated to Justin are being sold. All funds raised go directly to Justin's mother.
The accident happened at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, April 19 at the intersection of Route 501 and Route 130. State police say a 2004 Subaru Outback was traveling north on Rt. 501 when it attempted to make a left turn onto Rt. 130.
The Subaru pulled into the path of the Ford F250 pickup truck, and the two vehicle collided in the intersection.
The driver of the Subaru, a 17-year-old from Buena Vista, Va., was taken to Stonewall Jackson Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two 17-year-old female passengers were taken to Stonewall for treatment as well.
The driver of the F250, identified as Whitney Y. Southall, 22, of Farmville, Va., was not injured in the crash. State police say the 17-year-old driver of the Subaru has been charged with failure to yield right-of-way.
The crash remains under investigation.
