Police officer helps deliver baby in parking lot
POUND, Va. (AP) - Police say a newborn boy is doing well following his birth in a parking lot in Pound.
Police tell media outlets that Pound police Officer Perry Ratliff helped the baby's parents deliver him on Sunday, with coaching from a Wise County dispatcher over a telephone.
The baby's mother, April Fleming Harrison of Clintwood, tells the Bristol Herald Courier (
) that she and her boyfriend began driving to a hospital after she went into labor Sunday morning. She says she realized she would not get to the hospital in time and the couple stopped in the parking lot. Her boyfriend called 911 and Ratliff arrived at the lot before an ambulance came.
Harrison and her son, Mason Gauge Fleming, were taken to a hospital in Norton.
