Tractor trailer crash kills one in Amherst County

AMHERST (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police are investigating a serious crash that killed one person in Amherst County.

The accident happened at 1:20 p.m. Monday, April 27 along Route 60, less than a mile west of Lowesville Road/Route 778. 

Troopers say a tractor trailer was traveling west on Route 60 when it ran off the right shoulder and struck a tree. The driver, Christopher G. Hughes, 36, of Amherst, Va., was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. 

All lanes were reopened by 9:30 p.m. Monday. 

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
