ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Ultra-marathoner Scott Jurek, who is trying to run the entire 2,160-mile length of the Appalachian Trail, made a quick stop Thursday in Roanoke.

Local runners accompanied Jurek just after daybreak as he trekked the popular section of trail from Route 311 to McAfee's Knob, just outside of Roanoke.  Jurek is averaging about 50 miles a day in his attempt to break the record, by running from Georgia to Maine in less than the 46 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes set by Jennifer Pharr-Davis, (who ran in the opposite direction) according to the website Fastest Known Time online community.

Virginia is the approximate halfway point on the site.  Jurek is keeping his followers updated with daily posts on his Facebook page, which showed him cooling off in a creek near Daleville, Va.
