Commonwealth Games to feature new sports and charity drive

SALEM (WSLS 10) - Thousands of athletes will compete in the Roanoke Valley this weekend as a part of the Subway Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games is the largest multi-sport competition in Virginia. There will be competitions in 55 sports this year.

Nine new events have been added to the lineup including fling golf, paddle boarding and roller derby.

Also new this year, there is a sports equipment drive taking place. Attendees are encouraged to donate any type of sports equipment.

Donations will be divided amongst a handful of organizations that serve children in need, like the Rescue Mission and the Boys and Girls Club.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Salem Memorial Ballpark. It will get underway at 6 p.m. Friday.
