AMHERST COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The Amherst County Sheriff's Office is investigating the finding of a partial skull in the James River.

In May 2015, deputies say a local couple found what they thought to be a partial human skull.

After an acquaintance of theirs notified the sheriff's office, investigators executed a search warrant and seized the partial remains this week.

The partial skull was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke for review.

Pending examination by the Medical Examiner, officials say they're unable to determine how long the partial skull has been in the elements, nor any information on the decedent.

The investigation remains open.
