RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia has been awarded a $447,000 federal education grant to help defray the costs for low-income students to take advanced placement tests.

The U.S. Department of Education announced $28 million in grants Wednesday for 38 states, Washington, D.C, and the Virgin Islands.

By subsidizing test fees for low-income students, the department says the program is aimed at encouraging those students to take advanced placement tests and earn college credit for high school courses, reducing the time and cost required to complete a postsecondary degree.

State funding levels were determined on the basis of state estimates of the numbers of tests that would be taken by low-income students.
