ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A store that has been in the community for nearly three decades will close its doors at the end of the month.

Store Manager Chad Burdette of the Piggly Wiggly said there were several contributing factors that forced him to close doors. Their last day is August 28, 2015.

Burdette says one factor is the turnabout along 9th street -  the other is the Neighborhood Walmart.

Burdette, like many shoppers at Piggly Wiggly, says he's sad to see the store close. One shopper said the Piggly Wiggly reminded him of a store from his hometown. Burdette says it's going to be hard for small mom-and-pop stores to survive.

The owner of Tinnell's, a local grocery store that's been operating since 1937, says he's had to be creative to keep people shopping at the store. Rett Ward, the owner, said he works with local farmers, as well as having specialty meat that's not available at big chains.

Ward adds he's looking into delivering groceries to shopper's homes via the store's web site.
