LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - The first day of school started off with a little scare for students at Bedford Hills Elementary School in Lynchburg.

A small fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 17 inside the school - triggering the building's automatic fire alarm system.

According to the Lynchburg Fire Department, the fire melted a light fixture on the cafe stage located in the school's cafeteria-auditorium.

Luckily, the fire never spread and was quickly extinguished by the school's custodian before firefighters arrived on scene.

Fire officials say the children and teachers were promptly evacuated from the building and were able to enter back into the school about 30 minutes later.

No one was hurt during this incident.
