ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Extra Roanoke City police officers will be out across the area this week, working to keep students safe.

Thanks to a grant from the Department of Motor Vehicles, four extra officers will patrol school zones during the mornings and afternoons. Officers will be on the lookout for drivers that are speeding, not yielding to crosswalk traffic, and for those driving around buses.

Roanoke police say speeding in school zones is a problem.

Since 2011, the department has written more than 1,300 tickets for speed violations in school zones. The hope is that the increased police presence this week will serve as a reminder to drivers that school is back in session and lower speed limits need to be followed.
