U.S. court dates set in dispute over Va. uranium mining ban
DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - A November court date has been set in a mining company's bid to tap a huge deposit of uranium in Southside Virginia.
Virginia Uranium Inc. is suing a long list of state officials in hopes of ending a decades-long moratorium on the mining of the radioactive ore.
The company wants to mine what it says is one of the world's largest uranium finds in Pittsylvania County, but it has been unable to convince state legislators to lift the ban.
Opponents have cited a number of concerns, primarily concerning public drinking water sources. Virginia Uranium says the fears are unfounded.
According to recent filings in U.S. District Court in Danville, the court will hear pretrial motions on Nov. 6. Trial is set for December.
