ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Fire Crews from across the Roanoke Valley underwent training to improve their life-saving skills for a specific kind of emergency this weekend.

Roanoke Fire and Rescue crews were at the Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport, preparing for emergencies involving air travel.  Airport staff said fire crews like Roanoke Fire and Rescue worked with teams at the Roanoke Regional Airport to respond to a staged airplane accident.

They said the goal was to test  emergency response procedures.

About 50 volunteers acted as victims.

"I think it's great I think it's a testament to people wanting to help the airport out and being prepared in an unfortunate situation if something like this actually happens," Bradley Boettcher the Public Information Officer for the airport said.

Boettcher said the training exercise is held every three years.
