VSP Investigates fatal crash in Grayson County

GRAYSON COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash in Grayson County. The crash occurred Friday, Sept. 18, at 3:40 p.m. on Route 58, less than a mile east of Old Bridle Creek Road.

According to authorities, a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu was east on Route 58 when the driver ran off the right side of the road. The driver overcorrected causing the car to cross back onto Route 58, cross the centerline and strike head-on a westbound 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The driver of the Malibu, Avery L. Dowell, 33, of Independence, Va., died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. The driver of the Ford, Darrell G. Wright, 58, of Galax, Va., was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
