BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Blacksburg's town council voted Tuesday evening to apply for funding to make a notoriously dangerous intersection safer.

According to a town study, from 2009 to 2014, there have been 62 reported crashes at the North Main Street and 460 Bypass intersection resulting in 46 injuries, three deaths and more than $350,000 in property damage.

Now, town council will apply for funding from the Virginia Department of transportation (VDOT) for a safety improvement project at the intersection.

Town leaders initially wanted a full grade separated interchange, but VDOT said there is not enough money. That is why Blacksburg is changed its request to smaller improvements, like eliminating left turns.

Council leaders say even if VDOT approves their application, it could be up to three years before the improvement project is complete.
