Deputies investigate murder of 77-year-old man in Patrick County

PATRICK COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A Patrick Springs man's death has been ruled a homicide by the Virginia Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke.

According to Sheriff Dan Smith, at approximately 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 deputies were called to 115 KCM Lane where they found Hassell Baliles, 77, deceased inside the home.

Smith said investigators from his office and from the Virginia State Police worked through the week and weekend conducting interviews and processing evidence.

"We are pouring every available resource into solving this crime," Smith stated on Monday.

The Patrick County Sheriff's Office is asking for anyone with information on this crime to contact Sheriff Smith at 276-692-7012.

"If you know something pertaining to the person or persons responsible for taking Hassell's life, I urge you to do the right thing and call me, do not let this weigh on your conscience," Smith said.

The lead investigator on the case is Major Garry Brown who can be reached at 276-692-7015.

A substantial reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
