NBC News – Pope Francis bowed his head and clasped his hands in prayer Friday at one of the enormous waterfall pools that mark where the towers of the World Trade Center once stood.

The pope stood there alone for more than a minute, occasionally lifting his eyes to look out at the expanse. He laid a white rose along the edge, where names of the Sept. 11 dead are etched in bronze.

Francis visited ground zero in Lower Manhattan after an address to the United Nations General Assembly. He met there with the relatives of some of the victims killed in the terror attack.

Francis was to lead an interfaith prayer service at the site shortly.
