VINTON (WSLS 10) - A Vinton man was sentenced to 60 years in prison Wednesday for killing his mother nearly two years ago.

Dean Selbe talked a lot about that night when he admitted to killing his mother, Karen Selbe, in January 2014.

He said he hit his mom in the head with a hammer then stabbed her with a knife 68 times until she died.

He got emotional in court talking about his mom. Since he couldn't go to her funeral, he said what he would've said if he could've gone.

He described her as trustworthy and made everyone around her better.

Selbe said that night when he killed her, he heard voices including his great-grandmother's voice.

As you may recall, police found Karen Selbe's body while performing a welfare check at their home on Cedar Avenue. She had been stabbed multiple times and dismembered.

Experts said Selbe has a history of mental problems.

The Vinton Police Department investigated the murder. Chief Benjamin Cook was in the courtroom for sentencing and says it was one of the most gruesome cases he's seen.

"It was a case that was pretty horrific and actually pretty tragic for the community as well as the family of Selbe," says Cook. "I think this was a good outcome at least. I don't think we'll have any issues with Mr. Selbe out of the prison environment."
