CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - The Virginia DMV Highway Safety Office presented a Click It or Ticket Award to the Christiansburg Police Department on Thursday, November 12.

The award recognizes seat belt usage rates during the May 2015 Click It or Ticket mobilization. Based on the seat belt rates reported in Traffic Records Electronic Data System (TREDS), the Christiansburg Police Department had the highest seat belt use among agencies of similar size in Virginia.

Virginia's statewide safety belt compliance rate is currently 80.9 percent. Christiansburg's safety belt compliance rate is 96 percent.

The Click It or Ticket campaign encourages the use of seat belts to increase safety on streets and highways.

The department's Click It or Ticket Mini-Mobilization enforcement begins November 19 through November 26.

During this time, the Christiansburg Police Department will increase patrols to enforce occupant protection laws.

Drivers and passengers are urged to use required seat belts and ensure that underage passengers are properly secured or risk receiving a ticket.
