Woman injured after being hit, strangled unconscious by Salem man

SALEM (WSLS 10) - A man is in jail after a woman said he hit, strangled and physically restrained her from leaving early Monday morning.

Salem police said they got a call around 4:15 a.m. Monday about an assault in the 2000 block of E. Main Street. The female victim had apparent injures on her face and neck.

She told officers she was at a home on Clay Street the night of December 7 when a man, later determined to be an acquaintance of hers, hit her several times in the face, then strangled her until she was rendered unconscious.

Police said after she tried to leave the residence after she regained consciousness, but the man physically restrained her from leaving.

She later managed to leave the home on Clay Street and call police. She was taken to LewisGale Medical Center for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Tuesday, police arrested 46-year-old Artis Johnson of Salem, and charged him with assault and battery, strangulation and abduction. Johnson was held in the Roanoke County/Salem Jail without bond.
