BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech researchers believe there is a difference between safety and security when it comes to schools.

The Institute for Society, Culture and Environment at Virginia Tech is launching a project to look at how increased security measures like cameras, police officers and metal detectors can create a sense of fear and punishment for students.

Researchers said while they are not opposed to some of these measures, there is no way to keep danger out completely.

They said healthy relationships should be a top priority.

Virginia Tech will be applying for more grant money and other funding to continue researching this issue in depth.
