Roanoke City police aim to decrease drinking & driving this holiday

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - As we get closer to Christmas and New Year's Eve, expect to see more and more police patrols.

The Roanoke City Police Department is putting extra officers on the road.

With many celebrations, it's part of an effort to eliminate problems like drinking and driving.

The department says it typically sees an increase of DUI's this time of year.

"The biggest thing we're trying to reduce is the injuries and deaths of driving while under the influence. And we do that by making traffic stops for traffic violations and then, making sure we're doing sound DUI investigations on every stop." Greg Benton, Roanoke City Police, said.

DUI checks started last week and will continue into the new year.
