Officers say this all started Sunday night on Land Street, just off Virginia Beach Boulevard between Poplar Hall and Newtown Roads.

Police say shortly before 6 p.m., officers were called to the neighborhood after receiving reports of man with a weapon and a domestic dispute between a husband and wife.

According to investigators, the woman managed to escape the home and the man barricaded himself inside the house.

Negotiators were called to the scene to reason with the man, but police say he refused to leave the home. Police closed several neighborhood streets during the stand-off.

The suspect came out of the house after seven hours of unsuccessful negotiations, and started shooting. Officers say that's when a police K-9 was hit by gunfire.

Officers returned fire and shot the armed suspect. Paramedics rushed the suspect to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.

The K-9 was taken to an area veterinarian — where he was later pronounced dead. Portsmouth Police tweeted around 7:15 a.m. that the name of the dog is K-9 Kijger.
