Montgomery County leaders to take closer look at circuit court clerk debate
CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - Many Montgomery County residents are working to remove a leader from office only a couple months after she was elected.
A petition is circulating to recall circuit court clerk Erica Williams from her position after she did not re-appoint at least four of her nine deputy clerks.
More than a dozen people addressed the Board of Supervisors Monday night, which prompted the board to have the county attorney research what Williams has the right to do and what, if any, the board's role should be.
The county attorney will present these findings to the board and the public.
Williams did not return our phone call Tuesday.
A civil lawyer in Blacksburg said that constitutional officers have a great deal of freedom in selecting their staff. To remove them from office, it must be proven they are guilty of wrongdoing according to the law.
