ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - We're learning more about Roanoke County Parks and Recreation's master plan for Explore Park.
The priority of the project is to add more hiking trails and river access points for kayaking and fishing, and bring in more private food vendors.
The plan also includes zip lining tours, a kayak water park and an amphitheater seating 7,500 people.
Officials said it could take up to 15 years to complete.
The idea is to create an attraction that will draw in visitors within our area, as well as outside of our region.
"We want to grow the number of people that not only use the park, but are exposed to the park as well," said of Roanoke County's Parks and Recreation Director Doug Blount. "As you know the park closed in the late 2000s and there was a drastic decline in the usage."
The final plan will go to the board of supervisors for approval in a month.
Two upcoming meetings are planned to allow community members to give their input.
The meetings will be held on January 28 and February 2 of this year and run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
