Roanoke and Lijiang officials sign friendship agreement
ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -The Star City renewed it's friendship with a sister city on the other side of the globe.
Roanoke Mayor David Bowers and city council hosted city leaders from Leijang, China during their visit to Roanoke Friday.
Mayors from both cities signed a ceremonial document officially declaring a sister city relationship.
They also presented gifts to each other representing their local culture.
Mayor Bowers said the sister cities program is important to spur both economic growth and understanding.
"It is the same in Leijang. It is the same in Wonjui. It's the same here in Roanoke," Bowers said. "We are all on this earth together and the friendship we can form will hopefully lead to peace between our two countries."
Leijang is one of Roanoke's seven sister cities.
