Virginia police to hold memorial today for fallen K-9

WAVY – NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Norfolk Police Department is holding a private memorial service to remember fallen K-9 Krijger, who died in the line of duty last week.

According to police, 58-year-old Keith Richardson shot and killed Krijger after a 7-hour standoff on Land Street.

An officer then shot Richardson, who died the day after the standoff.

Norfolk Police say the beloved dog served his department for three years and faithfully gave his life last week.

The memorial service for Krijger is scheduled for this 2 p.m. at the Norfolk Police K-9 Range, which will then be followed by a burial at a pet cemetery in Virginia Beach.

Officers will escort a flag-draped casket with Krijger's remains to the burial site.

Police say that the public is welcomed to come out and pay tribute to Krijger along the procession route — which will begin at 2:45 p.m.
