WASHINGTON (AP) - An audit of the use of force by District of Columbia police has found that excessive force has not become a problem in the department in the seven years since federal oversight ended.
Washington's police department agreed voluntarily to Justice Department oversight in 2001 after it was labeled the deadliest big-city police force in the nation. The oversight led to a number of reforms and ended in 2008.

The D.C. auditor's office hired the department's former independent monitor to analyze whether those reforms are still having their desired effect. The report was released Thursday and finds that city police officers do not "use their firearms excessively," even when crime has increased.
However, the report says the department is not doing a good enough job investigating use of force.
