"We appreciate our partnership with Feeding America Southwest Virginia," said Allison McGee, spokesperson for Kroger's Mid-Atlantic division. "We are providing healthy balanced meals that include meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, and other perishable foods to enhance the health and nutrition of thousands of residents in southwest Virginia.
The check was presented by Rick Ramsuer, manager of the Bonsack Kroger, to Pamela Irvine, president/CEO of Feeding America Southwest Virginia.
The $20,000 will be used by the Food Bank to buy food to be distributed to pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and schools in the region.
The money came from Kroger's Bringing Hope to the Table program. "This program brings together our associates, suppliers and customers in a major effort to feed the hungry in the communities we serve in southwest Virginia," said McGee.
"We are grateful for Kroger's continuing support," said Irvine. "Kroger is a valuable partner that supports us every day in our effort to feed the hungry.
"We have committed to Kroger that their donations will remain in the local community that the store serves, so the donations meet the needs of people right here at home," added Irvine.
The food bank distributes more than 20 million pounds of food annually to more than 250 agencies, including soup kitchens, rescue missions and food pantries in the 26-county, 9-city region. Feeding America Southwest Virginia was founded in 1981 and has offices in Salem and Abingdon.
